Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, (2 October 1869 – 30 January 1948)

In 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born and raised in a Hindu household in Gujarat’s coastal region. He was called to the bar at the age of 22 in June 1891 after studying law at the Inner Temple, London.

He moved to South Africa in 1893 to represent an Indian merchant in a lawsuit, but his efforts to help Indians in the country were met with resistance and violence.

Gandhi continued to fight for Indian rights in South Africa over the next 20 years, eventually leading a campaign of non-violent civil disobedience against the South African government’s policies of racial segregation and discrimination.

It was here that Gandhi raised a family and first employed nonviolent resistance in a campaign for civil rights.

In 1915, aged 45, he returned to India and soon set about organizing peasants, farmers, and urban laborers to protest against excessive land-tax and discrimination.
